Akeeba Backup for WordPress

Akeeba Backup for WordPress

version 2.1.2 Stable

Released on: Thursday, 27 April 2017 14:50

Release Notes

What's new

Rewritten Javascript. We have rewritten all the client-side code to use native Javascript instead of jQuery. One less hard dependency means easier code to maintain. As it's been the case since 2012, our software only supports Internet Explorer 9 or better and all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, ...).

More secure JPS 2.0 backup format. We have upgraded the security of the JPS archive format by using PBKDF2 to create an encryption key from your password instead of the old method of password self-encryption. This greatly increases the security of shorter passwords. Moreover, passwords over 16 bytes are now fully taken into account (previous versions internally truncated passwords at 16 bytes). You will need Kickstart 5.3.0 or later to extract these archives. A new version of Akeeba eXtract Wizard will also be released soon as the current version is not compatible with the new JPS archives.

Supporting additional S3 regions. Canada and London regions are now supported.

Better support for sites using different database technologies. If you have a site with two or more databases using different database server technologies (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) you will now be able to back them up even if you choose the Native database dump engine.

Bug fixes. Some leftover issues regarding the archive integrity check of JPS archives have been ironed out along with some interface and PHP 5.3 compatibility problems. Moreover, we fixed an issue in our packaging process which resulted in the installation ZIP files being nearly twice as big as they should be.

Updating Akeeba Solo to version 2.1.1 or later

A bug in the updater in version 2.1.0.b1 and 2.1.0 makes it impossible to update to the new version using the built in updater. You will have to do that manually.

Heads up! You must NOT uninstall Akeeba Solo before the update. Doing so may result in loss of your backup settings and / or your backup archives. Instead, here's what to do:

  • Download the ZIP file for Akeeba Solo and extract it locally.
  • Upload all the files from the extracted archive into the folder on your site where Akeeba Solo is installed, using FTP or SFTP, overwriting your existing files.
  • Log in to Akeeba Solo to automatically complete the update process. There is no message when the process completes. You just see the main page of Akeeba Solo (this means the update succeeded).

You will only need to do this once, upgrading to version 2.1.1 or later for the first time.

Updating Akeeba Backup for WordPress to version 2.1.x

Due to changes in the packaging format and / or issues in the updater, you cannot update automatically from Akeeba Backup for WordPress versions 1.0 through 1.8.2 (inclusive) and versions 2.1.0.b1 and 2.1.0. You will have to do that manually.

Heads up! You must NOT uninstall or deactivate the plugin before the update. Doing so may result in loss of your backup settings and / or your backup archives. Instead, here's what to do:

  • Download the ZIP file for Akeeba Backup for WordPress and extract it locally. You will see an extracted folder named akeebabackupwp.
  • Upload the files from the extracted akeebabackupwp folder into your site's wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupwp folder, overwriting your existing files, using FTP or SFTP. Please note that the name of the folder on your site may be different than akeebabackupwp, e.g. akeebabackupwpcore, akeebabackupwp (1) or something similar. It depends on how you installed the plugin.
  • Log in to WordPress' wp-admin and access Akeeba Backup for WordPress to automatically complete the update process. There is no message when the process completes. You just see the main page of Akeeba Backup for WordPress (this means the update succeeded).

You will only need to do this once, upgrading to version 2.1.1 or later for the first time.

PHP 5.3.4 or later or PHP 7 is required

Akeeba Solo and Akeeba Backup for WordPress are compatible with PHP 5.3.04 and later versions, including 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 and the newest versions of PHP, 7.0 and 7.1. We'd like to remind you that most third party software which can be backed up by our software do not support PHP 7 yet. As a result we can't guarantee a trouble-free restoration or tha the restored site will work on PHP 7 as this depends entirely on the software powering your site.

Changelog

Bug fixes

  • [HIGH] Archive integrity and restoration of JPS archives fails (the archive is valid, it's the extraction script that's the problem). The previous fix didn't address the issue in full.
  • [HIGH] The installation ZIP file of the application contained double folders / files leading to unnecessary bloat.
  • [LOW] Fixed default backup description
  • [LOW] Manage Backups: editing a backup shows two "Description" areas when the second one is really the "Comment" area.
  • [LOW] PHP 5.3 compatibility in the OpenSSL adapter (settings encryption)

Miscellaneous changes

  • Control Panel: Display the backup date/time in the user's timezone
  • Date and time shown in Site Transfer Wizard is in the user's local timezone instead of GMT
