Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? yes
Joomla! version: (unknown)2.5.11
PHP version: (unknown)5.4
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)1und1
Admin Tools version: (unknown)pro 2.5.5

Description of my issue:
After create the htaccess with admin tools the pictures on my homepage (startpage) don't load. (Error 403)
also an attached slide show (phoca) direkt in a post don'work. Phocagallery itself still works, also some pictures on other sites.
When I comment out "rewrite engine on" all sites works fine. Now try it with "rewrite engine on" and add the directory "images" to the exceptions under "allow direct access to thes directories". Now it works.
My question is:
Which option is better (and safer)
The exception with the directory "images" and "rewrite engine on"
or
rewrite engine off and no exception for the directory images. Both is working.

You may need to read the general .htaccess troubleshooting page, as well as the page on finding out necessary .htaccess exceptions.

I read this pages but there are examples for one or two files. In my site, thera are hundred of pictures in the directory Images and the subdirecotries of images. I cannot add all the files to the exceptions.

Can you please give me an answer of my question, which one of the two possibilities I should use. Which one is saver.

"Allow direct access to these directories" is safer, but it shouldn't be needed. If you only have image files maybeyou just need to enter their file extensions in the "Front-end file types allowed in selected directories" area. Please do note that jpg, JPG, Jpg, JpG and jPG are different file extensions as far as your server knows. If you are improting images from a Windows computer you most likely have to enter JPG (all uppercase) in that list.

Thank you very much. I add now JPG to the frontend files and it works.
