 Hello,

i know that the Joomla update button was removed in the recent releases of Admin Tools.

But the "System - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Email" plugin is still available and on our site it is also enabled.

The php option allow_url_fopen is On and cURL support is enabled.

Also there is no firewall restriction for the joomla update url active, via "wget http://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml" i can downlaod the xml-file.

Could you give us a hint why we don't get update emails for new Joomla releases ?

(The Joomla update component is also telling that joomla is already up to date (Joomla 2.5.16) )

best wishes

It thinks your Joomla! is up to date, that is why you are not getting the email notification. Go to the Update Joomla! button, then the Options button on the update screen. Change your version to STS, save and close. You should now see the 3.2.2. version is available. Go back into Options, change back to LTS, save and close. You should now see the 2.6.18 version available. It just gets stuck sometimes and this trick will force it to update.

Hello,

many thanks for your reply.

I performed the steps you suggested.

But when i switch to STS, save and close, nothing happens, that means it still reads that already the newest Joomla version 2.5.16 is installed (in German).

When i switch back to LTS and save and close nothing happens too, it still reads that already the newest Joomla version ist installed.

What could be the cause ?

best wishes

It looks like something is blocking the update information. From the information in your first post, it looks like port 80 is open. Can you please try your wget command with https to test the port 443 access?

Hello,

i tried wget with https, it seems to me that the certificate is not valid

Details:

I tried "wget https://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml"

the output was:

--2014-02-20 12:20:45-- https://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml
Resolving update.joomla.org... 93.184.221.133
Connecting to update.joomla.org|93.184.221.133|:443... connected.
ERROR: no certificate subject alternative name matches
requested host name "update.joomla.org".
To connect to update.joomla.org insecurely, use '--no-check-certificate'.

Then i tried "wget --no-check-certificate https://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml"
the output was:

--2014-02-20 12:27:06-- https://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml
Resolving update.joomla.org... 93.184.221.133
Connecting to update.joomla.org|93.184.221.133|:443... connected.

requested host name "update.joomla.org".
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
2014-02-20 12:27:06 ERROR 404: Not Found.

Furthermore in the Joomla Core Table ".._update_sites" there are only entries with http-URLs like "http://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml" or "http://update.joomla.org/jed/list.xml"

Bye

The "System - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Email" plugin asks JUpdate to give it the update information for extension_id 700 which is Joomla!. If the update doesn't exist, the update site record doesn't exist / is unpublished, the access to the update XML is blocked by a firewall or URL fopen() wrappers are disabled (note: older Joomla! 2.5 versions *ignore* cURL) then the update fetch fails. Since JUpdate is part of Joomla! (and one that is in DESPERATE need of throwing away and writing from scratch) we can't offer any more help. If you suspect that the problem lies in Joomla!'s JUpdate why don't you try Akeeba CMS Update which completely sidesteps JUpdate, using our own code to fetch update information?

Hello,

again many thanks for your reply.

It could be a problem with Joomla version 2.5.16.

I upgraded another Joomla installation on the same server from 2.5.16 to 2.5.18 via Extension manager and "Install from URL" , it worked.

Now when i switch from LTS to STS in the options area in the Joomla Update Component it is shown that the newest version is 3.2.2 and the update URL is also shown, when i switch back it reads you already have the newest version 2.5.18

Maybe there is a problem in Joomla Update component in version 2.5.16 or a problem in the combination of Joomla version 2.5.16 / Admin-Tools.

(Would you recommend Akeeba CMS Update since it is "alpha" ? Or is it better to wait for a stable release ?)

Bye

Sorry, I missed your reply :(

This is a problem with Joomla!'s update cache. Cleaning it is really complicated. I'd suggest using Akeeba CMS Update. Even though it's still alpha it tends to be more stable than Joomla!'s own updater.

Hello,

thanks for your reply.

Currently in one of our Joomla 2.5.18 Sites the Joomla Update Component is signalling that Joomla Version 2.5.19 is available and after updating Admin Tools we get also a notification about the newest Joomla version (2.5.19)

So when the Joomla update component works correctly can one rely on the Admin Tools Joomla update notification ?

(Is the method of cleaning Joomla's update cache in Ticket #19438 the regular way ?)

Maybe we try Akeeba CMS Update, could you tell me when there is a stable release ?

Bye

Precisely. The Admin Tools plugin for Joomla! updates gets the update information from Joomla! itself. If Joomla! reports the correct version, our plugin works just fine. When Joomla! reports something wrong, our plugin acts on this wrong information. That's why we are building CMS Update; it uses its own method to check for updates instead of relying on Joomla!. We currently don't have a schedule for a stable release.
