i cannot get into the backend of my joomla site.

i have removed the htaccess file, disable admin tools but still cannot get in.

the server help desk have advised that it is the admintools plug-in causing the problem and even though it is disabled he reckons it is still the problem.

any ideas on what i can do?

If you have a site level cache running, it will keep you out until the cache clears. Your site is running off the cache, not off the disk.

You can always rename the directory plugins/system/admintools to plugins/system/admintools-DISABLED and Joomla! won't be able to load the plugin, no matter if it's enabled or not.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I was not thinking of the Joomla! cache, I was thinking of a site level cache, something that your host would provide to cache your entire site. It makes the site much faster but will drive you crazy in a situation like this where you're trying to make a change and it seems to be ignoring you.

If you are still having problems, check with your host to see if you have such a thing and if they can tell you how to turn it off (temporarily) or can they purge it so it reads from disk and picks up the renamed file.

thank you. i had disabled admintools but i still had the problem. what i was finding was that when i typed in the admin url (with the extended super user code) it was redirecting to the site url and the extended code without the administrator being included and then looping to the homepage.

this is the only site this happens on and as far as i can see i have set it up the same way as my other sites.

i have eventually been able to log in by putting www. at the front of the url..... very odd..... i have no idea why this has happened

any ideas on what i may have set to cause this?

dlb
The behavior of www/non-www could change with rolling back the .htaccess file. The standard Joomla! file does not have any redirect for non-www in it.

It just shouldn't have redirected from the back end to the home page without Admin Tools active. I still think there had to be a copy of the un-renamed plugin in a cache somewhere.

I'm glad you got it working.
