I took this problem to Siteground who made a few changes that resulted in a Gateway timeout and then a 500 Error. Subsequent changes simple reverted to original problem. I imagine they changed the timeout errors on the php files. Most recent suggestion was to disable everything which seems rather extreme and even download the entire site and do it locally.

I read the support ticket on here, #15322, and first of all removed some code I had added today to block some URLs. This didn't help, so I disabled .htaccess completely. Still getting the same error code now of 334 no matter what I do.

Siteground suggested I optimise database tables, which I did and no difference. I actually deleted Admin tools and tried to install new version. Having the same problem with Akeeba Backup.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

As you can see for yourself, error 324 means that Chrome didn't receive a reply from your site. So yes, this is a timeout issue while installing component on your site. Unfortunately we cannot help you with that because we're not your host. Please ask your host to (at least temporarily) increase the PHP timeout limit to 120 seconds.

If this doesn't help, follow the instructions you read in ticket 15322. If it results in a PHP error please paste it here, verbatim for me to help you. If it doesn't result in a PHP error the problem lies with server timeout settings I can't help you with :(

I went back to Siteground who requested superadmin access which was provided. Their response was that they found FTP enabled and that as soon as they disabled it the upgrade was completed. This was for Akeeba backup.

FTP was enabled because when I first tried the upgrade I received the message "Make sure that your temp-directory is writable or that you have enabled Joomla!'s FTP options in your site's Global Configuration." I checked the temp directory and then enabled FTP.

I have installed a new version of Admin tools this morning without issue and the plugin. So, I have no idea what went on, but thought I'd report back because the instructions above supposedly caused the problem. #abovemypaygrade

You misread the instructions. You only had to double check your temporary directory. I can tell you upfront what was the problem: you had entered it as /tmp instead of the correct absolute path which looks like /home/myuser/public_html/tmp. SiteGround most likely fixed that for you along with the FTP issue (both are set in the configuration.php file). If you read the installation troubleshooting instructions again you'll see that I first tell you to check your temporary directory (and tell you how to do it), then I say if all else fails try enabling the FTP option ;)
