Is it possible to leverage the failed login log to alert the user as to how many login attempts they have left before they are blocked? For example, if I have the limit of failed logins set to 5, after the 1st failed login a message would appear in the pre-text of the login that says "You have 4 login attempts left". After the next failed login, it would say "You have 3 login attempts left"... and so on.

Hello Brady,

we are going to not implement that for several reasons:
  1. there is no support in the Joomla! core about this which means that we have to write specific code for each one of the thousands of login modules and their versions
  2. it requires making a DEAD SLOW query upon login which makes the site appear dead slow too.
  3. it's not a reliable indicator
  4. it's so slow that will amplify Denial of Service attacks

Implementing that feature would actually make your site more insecure, so I'm sorry but we're not going to develop that.
