 OPTIMISATION AND UTILITY

Redirect old domain to new domain

I read here:

https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/admin-tools/optimisation-and-utility.html

your advise for redirecting old domain to new when moving a website.

I have however always previously taken the following steps when moving a website from an old domain to a new one.

I have moved the website to a new hosting account (new domain) and replaced the old website on the old hosting account (old domain) with a 301 Redirect (added to a solitary htaccess file).

My questions

Does using the HTACCESS MAKER in the PRO version of Akeeba Admin Tools mean that there is no need to add the above htaccess file in place of the website on the old hosting account?

What if a user were to have done the above and to add the old domain in the 'redirect old domain to new domain' field?

Thanks for your time.

Ken :)

Hello Ken,

It depends on how you've set up your sites. The .htaccess Maker feature supposes that your new and old sites are served from the same site hosting account. In other words you have set up cPanel to have oldsite.com as an add-on domain to newsite.com. Normally that would cause the exact same content to be served by both oldsite.com and newsite.com. This would count as "duplicate content" in search engines and they would penalize your site. Hence the .htaccess Maker feature.

However, that does NOT apply in your case.

You have two different site hosting accounts for oldsite.com and newsite.com. In this case you cannot possibly create a .htaccess file in newsite.com and have it magically take effect in oldsite.com since the two hosting accounts are isolated from each other. In this case you do need to create your own .htaccess, as you are already doing.
