Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes, the Troubleshooting section
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Not applicable?
Joomla! version: 1.7.3
PHP version: 5.3
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Admin Tools version: 2.1.14

Description of my issue:

I'm confused here. Extension Manager Update tell me Joomla 2.5. Admin Tools tell me 1.7.4.

As I don't yet want 2.5, will Admin Tools update it to 1.7.4 or to 2.5?

Ah, I see. Admin Tools will upgrade to 2.5, not 1.7.4. However, Admin Tools 2.2.a2 will upgrade to 1.7.4, not 2.5.0 (a bug prevented it from picking 2.5.0, which might be desirable in your case).

Apparently I have to add yet another option to let you choose between the current version or the next version :(

Thanks for the very fast reply.

I might be wrong, but I thought it was advised not to upgrade Admin Tools to 2.2.a2 as it was still Alpha and caused some problems?

You can upgrade to 2.2.a2, upgrade to Joomla! 1.7.4, then upgrade to Admin Tools 2.2.a3 which is very solid (I use it on my live sites). 2.2.a3 is called "alpha" because I have not implemented all intended features for this release, not because it's not stable. I could just as well call it 2.2 Stable and move the new features to release 2.3, but I just didn't want to :)

Well, it does say in big red letters on the Admin Tools page for 2.2.a2 "Public preview (alpha) release ARE NOT meant to be installed on your live sites!... If you accidentally installed it on a live site, please consult our release announcement for downgrade instructions." :D

If you're absolutely sure it won't cause problems, which I guess you are or you wouldn't suggest it despite the red notice, then I'll try it but I admit to feeling a bit nervous about it...

Forgot to ask - if I upgrade to 2.2.a2, do I just download it and install it on top of 2.1.14?

For the particular use case I am telling you, it is safe to install 2.2.a2. It's not like you're going to stick to it. You only need it to upgrade to 1.7.4, then you'll swap it with the (much more) stable 2.2.a3. Therefore you expose your site to no risk.

And, yes, you can install it on top of 2.1.14.
