I maintain a number of sites at the same hoster (Novatrend) who provide excellent support and tools.
However I've noticed that a number of sites come up with the following error when I try to update the GeoIP Database:
A connection error occurred. Please retry updating the GeoLite2 Country database in 24 hours.

I've compared the PHP versions and setting and they seem identical.

I also have the same Sites reporting update errors , reporting that some update sites could not be opened.

I use the same tools and setup on most sites, so this is a real mystery to me.

Any ideas?

The GeoIP error sounds like a real connection error. That is coming from Admin Tools, it simply couldn't connect at that time and wants you to try later.

The Joomla! installer is something else. When it can't connect to a remote update server, it marks the server as unavailable, and it doesn't try again until you go into the server settings and re-enable that server. It may be that the server really is permanently offline, but it does the same thing for a temporary connection problem. It does warn you in all but the very early versions that it has sites marked as unavailable. Just manually re-enable the site and try again.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The odd thing ist that the GeoIight error is always on the same sites. But a thought just occured to me that I need to check out. I suspect the problem sites are literally on the same server at the hoster, so I need to take this up with them.

Re the joomle updater : my first step is always to activate all the update sites then go and look for updates, so I don't think that?s the problem. But again, it's on the same sites.

I'll get back to you after I talk to the hoster tomorrow.

Hi again

The hoster checked this out and it turns out that a few of the links relate to an issue with Cloudflare. From what I gather, this has to do with a problem relating http v. https
As I could not supply the exact link which is called by the the GeoIP button in Admintools, this has still not been resolved, so I guess It's up to you to solve that.

I hope you do that, as it means these sites have not updated the database for months.

Apparently I am not the only person or that this server is the only server affected.

All the sites using AdminTools GeoIP are affected (19)

There is an active attempt at solving the issue going on at JCE, another affected component. Please check out this thread :

This is a server issue: your Joomla installation can't connect to any external site. Since we're using the same method Joomla is using to fetch updates (Joomla core API), it's normal that both processes are failing. You need to get in touch with your host and report that you can't update your Joomla installation.

Ok - finally found the problem. The server was listed at the honeypot foundation.

I implemented my account in AdminTools and the problem went away.
