Hello,

installation is performed by Joomla itself, our code does not even run at that stage.
Looking at the error, it seems that Joomla can't handle the extensions of type "package": other extensions are updating just fine since they are using a different extension type.
Usually in these cases the best thing to do is to reinstall Joomla; given you are already using an outdated version, I'd strongly suggest you to install the latest version of Joomla. That will keep you updated AND fix your issue.
