Hi there,

I've done what I thought might be a simple migration from one site to another using akeeba backup. Everything seemed to go well until I used htaccess maker to lock down the site.

When I use this I get an error on the browser after the htaccess file has been made. This occurs on the front and backend.

This page isn’t working

www.***.com redirected you too many times.

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS   Naturally I cleared the cookies and tried other devices. I've had a search on the issue but I'm still no wiser. Removing the .htaccess file or renaming it restores access to the admin area

Check the $live_site setting in configuration.php.  It should normally be an empty string.  This setting is only used when your web server doesn't report the URL of the site correctly.

If $live_site doesn't have www but you're redirecting non-www to www in .htaccess, it creates an endless loop.  It works in reverse too.

Thanks for your swift reply!

I've just taken a look at the said file and its as follows, it does look empty...

public $live_site = '';

Thanks again!

OK, $live_site isn't the problem.

We're still looking for an inconsistency with the www redirection.  Look in .htaccess Maker, at the bottom of the screen, there are two URL fields there.  Make sure they are consistent with the www redirection.  If you're redirecting to www, they need to include the www.

Are you using any SEF extensions, like sh404SEF?  Are you doing any redirection from an old URL to a new one?

Hi thanks for that. Both entries match the new domain name (without the https:// or the final / )

I saw further up redirect www and non-www and changed that to do not redirect, and the site appears to work. It would be great not to have www on there, but I seem to remember the host (dreamhost) has an option to remove www....

If your host has an option for www to non-www redirect, that could be where the loop is coming from.  Just leave the redirect off in .htaccess Maker and do it through the host control panel.  That should work.  Actually, the domain is example.com, that would have to be redirected to the subdomain www.example.com.  So we really want to turn the www redirect off.
