Description of my issue:

Hello,

My problem is not really a problem but a question for understanding what I see on my screen. I have done a backup of a project site and I saw that my backup xas in two files, the first one named mysitedottdl.20120806-093558.J01 (size 2 147 352 576) and the second one named mysitedottdl.20120806-093558.jpa (size 258 217 889).
My question is why did I have two files instead of one normaly ? I will try to restore my project on a another host to see on what file is my backup but if you can take a moment to explain me the difference it will be great.
Thx for reading and, I hope, for your answer.
Have a nice day

Hello Eric,

There is a setting in Akeeba Backup called "Part size for split archives". It's normally set to 2Gb, lower if the Configuration Wizard detects that your host needs a lower setting. Its purpose is to allow Akeeba Backup to split the backup archive to multiple files. Why is that? PHP on everything except 64-bit Linux has a hard limit of 2Gb - 1 byte per file. Anything larget than that and the file operations fail. Some hosts impose their own file size limits, e.g. Strato.de doesn't allow you to create files larger than 10Mb; if you try, it crashes your script. That's why Akeeba Backup will end up splitting the backup archives into many files.

In your case the backup archive is split in two parts. You need both part files to restore it. Just upload both files to your new host along with Kickstart. Kickstart will list only the .jpa file but it will automatically understand that it's a split archive and restore all parts for you (in fact, it can't extract the archive if any part is missing!). It's the same thing as having split ZIP files or split RAR files (remember those .rar, .r01, .r02, etc files from the old Windows 95 days?).
