So for a while i've been running J2.5 on main site and J3.4 on a sub folder of a live server (easiest way for me to test J3 performance and extensions on server)

j2.5 installed on host root
j3 installed on <root>/Joom3

with J2.5 EOL coming up fast i need to move the j3.4 installation from the subfolder to root. What exactly is the best way to do it. I know i can simply empty the root and move the files from joom3 to root and modify a few lines in the config.ini file. However i'm a bit reluctant to do that because of the impact on extensions that will have. Can this be done safely?

Another way is ofcourse the AB method, however at some point the installation will ask for database credentials. Can this be skipped? as obviously the credentials will be the same or are they required (i'm guessing the later, to update folder location in database).

So yeah, what's the best way to do it.

Hello Wim,

the easiest and fastest way to move your site is to backup the subfolder, test that the backup is ok extracting it locally, then delete the whole site folder (root + subfolder) and restore the backup in the site root.
Akeeba Backup will change all the required files, please supply the database connection info, too. They are required in order to update the configuration file.

just test that it extracts ok or actually install it? Cause i don't have any of that xampp install and installing it (web/php/sql/control pannel...) would be a major hassle for me. Wouldn't know where to begin

i can't imagine anything going wrong by just packing it and unpacking it.

Guess i could just remove the root contents and install it, and leave the subfolder active till everything checks out.

As far as the database goes, what about the tables. Keep em, drop them,... or just create a new db all together?

Extracting only would be enough: if the archive is corrupted you won't be able to extract it, so you'll immediately see that.
Regarding the database, you can drop them.
Once again, remember to take a backup of the current 2.5 site, too, just in case anything would go wrong ;)

Nothing major on 2.5. That site has been "static" for a while while i did the major config work on j3. Guess i'll get to work later then. Might take me a while to update this ticket with progress but limited time during the week. Could be till before/after the weekend until i respond back.

Please keep this open until then
