EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

I am getting the following error "Your version of PHP does not have the mbstring extension installed or activated. Having it enabled is a Joomla! requirement. Joomla! and Akeeba Backup will not work properly. Please ask your host to enable the mbstring extension on PHP 5.5.35 running on your server."

I have a virtual server and have the following settings configured now after I first saw the warning that just started.
mbstring.detect_order UTF-8
mbstring.encoding_translation Off On
mbstring.func_overload 0
mbstring.http_input auto
mbstring.http_output UTF-8
mbstring.internal_encoding UTF-8
mbstring.language all
mbstring.substitute_character none

When I view the server settings in Joomla/System Information/ PHP information It does not show any mbstring information.

I am not getting any failure that I know of yet but just want to prevent something from cropping up on my and being a problem. Any suggestions or just ingnore it for now?

Hello David,

you should enable and correctly configure the mbstring extension, otherwise you could receive unexpected errors as backup failures.
Server configuration is outside the scope of our Terms of Support, however I can tell you that we are simply checking if the following functions are defined:

mb_strlen
mb_convert_encoding
mb_substr
mb_convert_case

I am not a server person and trying to muddle through this I have mbstring.encoding_translation turned on and will have to figure out this answer.

In this case you should ask your sysadmin or hosting support the exact steps required to enable it in your current server environment.
