Description of my issue:

I recently noticed that both my 'Akeeba Backup' and 'Admin Tools' component links have disappeared.

I think I updated them via joomla auto updater but didn't take much more notice.

Then I had someone trying to log into our website multiple times, so I went to block them and that's when I noticed they were missing.

I have tried to re-install them (without uninstalling them), but had no luck.

Could you help me please work out what has happened?

Are you using JSN PowerAdmin by any chance or any other JoomlaShine product? There was a bug which they told us they fixed that caused exactly that.

If that's not the case, most likely Joomla! dropped the ball while installing the update. In this case you should be able to get the menu items back if you install each component twice in a row, without uninstalling before or in between.

If that doesn't help, kindly note that Joomla! 3.7 and later allow you to customize the backend menu. If you or one of the other administrator on the site have done this you will need to create a menu item for our software.

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for your reply.

I am not using either JSN PowerAdmin or JoomlaShine products, this just came out-of-the-blue.

I also tried your 'install twice' idea, but this did not work either.

The one thing I do get is the following error:

The alias com-akeeba is already being used by COM_AKEEBA menu item in the Vehicle Menu menu (remember it may be a trashed item).

I have no idea how to even do what this error is even suggesting with a component menu item.

It looks like your menus got screwed up. Apparently Joomla! believes that the menu item to our component exists in a menu called "Vehicle Menu". If you were to delete that menu item and try the double reinstall it should fix it. If that doesn't work you're out of luck :/
