Please look at the bottom of this page (under Support Policy Summary) for our support policy summary, containing important information regarding our working hours and our support policy. Thank you!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
Our provider one.com are updating the version of php. from 5.6 to 7.1 or 7.2
Our version of Joomla will not run on the later version of php. Can I update Akeebabackup first to the latest version and then Joomla? I don't want to try lew versions with no backupin place?

There is no version of our software which can safely be installed on such an old version of Joomla and such a new version of PHP. You should do a staggered migration. Joomla! 3.2 became end of life in the end of 2012. That was six years ago.

Upgrade Akeeba Backup to 4.7.7 and take a backup of your site while it is still on PHP 5.6. This is the last version which works on Joomla! 3.2.

Before upgrading your site please disable Akeeba Backup, Admin Tools and their plugins.

Then upgrade your site to Joomla! 3.9 which supports both PHP 5.6 and 7.2.

Finally, upgrade and enable Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools to their latest version.

Many thanks for the information. i have carried out the steps you suggested & all went well till I upgraded Joomla to 3.9
The front end of the site works but I am unable to log on to the back end of the site. I get 1054 database error uknown column. I have tried database repair but it has not helped. I wondered if you could suggest a way forward please?

From a cursory Google search it seems that what you need to do is:

  • Keep a copy of all your backup archives
  • Remove all files from your site.
  • Restore your site from a backup.
  • Follow the same instructions as before but stop before updating your site.
  • Upgrade to Joomla! 3.6.5 first.
  • Upgrade to Joomla! 3.9.0.
  • Now upgrade and enable Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools to their latest version.

See https://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=954795&start=30#p3493310

The underlying issue is that there was a security change in 3.8.0. This fix can only be applied on sites running 3.6.5 or later. Therefore you need to upgrade to 3.6.5 before installing Joomla! 3.8.0 or newer.
