Hi, I have a joomla site with a 4GB database (finder tables are very large) that I'd like to backup to S3. I'm relatively new to S3 as well as akeeba. The site is connected to a 10mbit link to the Internet, so backups are slow.

Akeeba appears to break the backup into three chunks - two 2GB pieces and a 300MB third.

I'm using the command-line akeeba-backup.php script for backups, and specifying the profile number.

It appears backups always timeout during the upload process.

What configuration changes should I make to improve backup reliability?

Also, backup profile #1 has problems. I'd like to delete it, but it won't let me because it's #1. Do I rename it? Can I delete it directly from the filesystem? I've also set #4, the one I've configured properly, to be the default.

This is the cli log from one of the failed backups. The first warning can be ignored.

It doesn't look like a timeout, it looks like S3 is dropping the connection. Disabling the SSL encryption in Post Processing setup my help. S3 goes through phases once in a while where the connections are just unstable. It goes away after a day or so.

You are correct, you can't delete Profile #1. Directly editing your database is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted. But if you switch the 1 and 4 profile numbers you will find you can do what you want to accomplish. But I didn't tell you that.
