OK this might be a weird one.

Installed joomlapack the other day on my new (in dev) site... installed free first, read as much of the docs as I could take, did a full backup (balanced) .... greatstuff.

Now, on the whole I want to do db backups daily and site backups weekly. So I upgraded to special so I could do the db's - tried it, it worked - thinks 'I'm doing well here'

Next, I install jpack remote -special ed, and after a few teething problems (i.e. me not reading things right) I got it working. I did a db backup, and even set up a schedule.
Next I try the same with a full site, (having setup 2 profiles - 1 for full, 1 for db only) it connects fine, does the db, but fails aboult halfway through with an
XML-RPC layer error: Socket Error #10054 connection reset by peer.

On the backend it now says Backup failed - retry using balanced (which is in the simple menu)

I tried tweaking things a bit - tired via backend, no probs, again via remote and it failed again.
(OK now I'm lost)

So what I guess I am asking is
Can i set profiles for simple and advanced settings - i.e. Profile 1 for full site on balanced,, with profile 2 for db only (whih is an advanced setting)

Alternativley, what would be the best settings to try to simulate balanced in the advanced panels?
I did look through the docs, but it doesn't seem to give the info on just what the balanced settigns are.
(on the other hand I might just be being dense)

Cheers in advance

To reset the default settings to a faster set:
[ol]
[li]Switch from Expert mode to Easy mode (trust me).[/li]
[li]Under configuration, select the "Optimistic" settings. If these won't work with your server, JoomlaPack will offer to step down to balanced, why start too slow? :D [/li]
[li]Switch back to Expert mode.[/li]
[li]Adjust settings like MySQL 4 compatibility mode and Keep alive as needed.[/li][/ol]
JoomlaPack and Remote should do what you are trying to do. I don't see any steps that you might have missed. There is currently a bug involving multiple profiles and automatic file deletion. Just manually delete your older backup files until 2.3 is released.

It looks like your server stopped the backup. I don't know why it would stop a Remote backup and allow a back end backup to finish. Let's confirm again that the back end backup works. If it does, please post the log from a failed Remote backup. You will need to zip the file to get the forum to accept it.

Sorry it took me a while to get back again. Had to switch to other pc (cos works laptop don't have a zipper).

Tried your suggestions and repeated backend (full) backup and yep it still worked (and yep that WAS QUICK)

Tried via frontend (remote) using same settings and failed instantly (not even a log) tried balanced and it still failed.
Think the timing isn't related to the script, rather somethign to do with my host - compared log to a successful one and couldn't see anything really different (other than not completing.

In the long term - as this is so damn quick, full backup via backend only, isn't the end of the world. (just a matter of routine for me to get used to). The main thing is (for me) that the remote DB backup works (and it does).
Re-uploading a few pics and files isn't a major job, re-editing & creating content and settings is.
I run mirror of my sites on local anyway, so tend to keep full copy of info.

But any suggestions always welcome

It has something to do with the temp files, but it doesn't make sense that it can do a back end and fails there on a Remote. I'll flag this for Nicholas.

OK thanks for looking. No problems at all with backend. It's superfast :D o But I just opened jpremote once I'd finished and it was dumped to my laptop a few seconds later - Brilliant stuff. (I'll do a donation for that alone, once I have some cash in my account ;) )

The only way to know that a backup is good is to restore it. This is best done on a test server. Local LAMP/WAMP/MAMP servers are pretty easy to set up these days.

My paranoia has served me well over the years.

I'll second the paranoia stuff. Many times, while developing JoomlaPack, I thought the backup was produced just fine, but the restoration failed, which kinda beats the purpose ;) Better be safe than sorry, so test that backup thoroughly!

Now, on the Remote vs. Backend, I am lost too. Are you sure you are using the latest Native Tools 2009.3 (both JoomlaPack Remote and the plg_jpremote on your site)? If so, we might have some luck trying a simple workaround:
a. Go to JoomlaPack Configuration and enable front-end backup, choosing a secret word of your liking. Save.
b. Go to JP Remote, double click on the site definition to open up the editor dialogue and put the secret word of the previous step in the password field. Yes, it's strange to do that, but we're attempting a user authentication workaround, just in case.
c. Save and retry backup. If this works, the problem was a Joomla! user or authentication plug-in misbehaving under the XML-RPC mode.

If Remote fails again, left and then right click on your site definition and select the View Log option. Please ZIP and attach this log file in your next post. This log gives me a view on the raw data exchanged between Remote and your site, so that I can understand what went wrong.
