Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.3
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.1.61-community-log
Host: Bluehost
Akeeba Backup version which took the backup: 3.4.2
Kickstart version used to extract the backup: 3.4.0

Description of my issue:
I tried to restore from Amazon S3 backup since I lost access to my site (back and front end) testing SSL. While downloading the files from Amazon they were "saved as a link" (!) in my PC with a .txt extension name. The JPA extension was lost the moment I tried to save to my PC. I had to use a previous backup stored on my PC with the .jpa extension to be able to restore with Kickstart. The Amazon file was useless.

QUESTIONS:
1) What went on there ?
2) How to correcty download backup files from Amazon when back-end access is lost?

Thxs

I guess the download method you were using got somehow borked. Try using S3Fox (Firefox plugin, cross-platform), CloudBerry Explorer for Amazon S3 (Windows, has a free and a commercial version), CyberDuck (Mac OS X, free) or Transmit (Mac OS X, commercial). These are all tested by yours truly and found to be working.
