Description of my issue:
I have a failed backup from January and I urgnelty need to recover data from it if at all possible.

The file name is site-www.bgen.org.uk-20120111-151239.j01

I want to see if I can extract any useful article content from this failed backup, ie it would be content from the database.

This isn't a complete backup archive. Complete backup archives have a .jpa extension and may or may not have accompanying .j01, .j02 etc files, depending on their size and other setting in Akeeba Backup. At best, you have a partial backup file which may contain some data of your site. Since the database dump is the first thing to be stored in the file, you might get lucky enough to be able to restore your database.

I would suggest renaming the file to site-www.bgen.org.uk-20120111-151239.jpa and use the Akeeba eXtract Wizard to extract it locally. Then, please follow the emergency manual restoration procedure to restore as much of your database is stored in that archive.
