Description of my issue: No access to administrator after retsoration

Hi Nick

We use your products many times a day on hundreds of websites with no issues but I now have a problem with one retoration.

I have restored my site - public side works fine, but I have no access to the administrator side of the site.

I have followed your recommendations on troubleshooting to no avail. Gone through all the .htaccess recommendations but no solution.

The site does contain Virtuemart, which now demands an absolute URL for a 'safe' path - I have gone back and removed that reference, taken a new back up and reloaded but the problem persists. The site also uses RSSEO but the plugin whih potentially contains an absolute reference is not acxtiviated and the abnsolute refernce is empty.

I would be grateful for your advice and ideas.

Kind regards

Mike

Hello Mike,

Unless you give me a screenshot and/or description of the back-end problem you're asking me to help you with one of several dozens problems which may or may not be happening on your site. Please try mentioning any error messages and at least describe the symptoms in detail. It's like going to the physician. If you tell him "I think my child is sick sick" he can't help you. Explaining the symptoms will allow him to diagnose you. In this case your site is the sick child and I'm the doctor ;)

Apologies, thanks for being reasonable!

I have now edited the configuration.php file and turned on error reporting to maximum and receive the following when trying to log-in to the administrator back-end
Fatal error: Call to a member function login() on a non-object in /home/vansignw/public_html/administrator/components/com_login/admin.login.php on line 64

Does that give you a clue?

Kind regards

Mike

You have tried restoring a Joomla! 2.5 site on top of a Joomla! 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7 site. This is not possible. If you want to do that you have to wipe out all files and folders before restoring the site. The reason is that several files have been removed or renamed in Joomla! 2.5. If Joomla! sees Joomla! 1.5's files it will try to load them instead, causing this kind of problems.

Thank you. We have made perhaps 30 Joomla!2.5 sites now but they were all for new clients from scratch; this is the first of a series of upgrades of older sites and on reflection is the first one to go live and my assumption was that you could simply load over the top. Very grateful for the insight, I hope my experience will short-cut the issue for others.

Kind regards

You're welcome!

I found out about this issue the hard way myself. I tired migrating an old site (luckily, on a testing server!) from 1.5 to 1.7 and then tried to transfer the upgraded site on top of the old one. Hell broke loose, I started debugging the issue and came up with the same error message as you did. I started looking at the file lists of 1.5 and 1.7 and spotted the extra file. I did some debugging to see what the heck is going on. It turns out that Joomla! will try to load the legacy dispatcher file before the new one, ending up loading Joomla! 1.5's files first. Therefore the only solution is wiping the site clean of its files before restoring the upgraded site. Doh! :)
