 hi
I have migrated a2.5 joomla website to joomla 3 .
I am now working locally on the new template.
my question is:
can I make a backup locally on my pc and then move it on the server using kickstart.php and the backup of the new joomla 3 website?
thank you
flavio

You can restore the backup of any site on any server. However, you will need to remove the files from the server before restoring the backup. Do note that this replaces (overwrites) the site on the server with the one you have in the backup archive.

If I understand correctly you want to replace your live Joomla! 2.5 site with the new Joomla! 3 site you were working on locally. If this is exactly what you want to do then yes, you can do it.

If, however, you do NOT want to replace all of the data and files on the live site with the ones from the local site you cannot do that. In this case please specify exactly what you're trying to do. Your original ticket text is a bit ambiguous.

Hi Nicholas
thanks for your prompt reply.
I have completely changed the template of my joomla 2.5 website with a new one that works with joomla 3.
I don t want to work live because I will make big changes and I want to take my time.
Once it will finish I would like to take a backup locally with Akeeba and then upload it on the server with kickstarter.
do you think it s a bad idea? better one?
I don t mind to replace all the datas..the ones I am interested in come from one extension ( djcatalog 2) if this doesn't affects google url
hope it s more clear thanks a lot

Flavio,

Nicholas is at a conference today, so I'm going to jump in here. If your live site is gathering new data, new users registering, new articles, new comments on articles, sales data from a store, any sort of new data, then restoring an old local backup is not an option. If your live website does not have new data, or the data can be manually moved to the development site, then you are fine. It is not easy to restore a site without overwriting all of the data on the site. Saving new users, etc. is VERY difficult.
