Hello,

When I performed restoration via Akeeba interface and started the extraction, I received the message below

The extraction has failed.
Extraction of the backup archive has failed.
The last error message was:
Could not open /var/www/html/xxxxxxxxxxxxx/._.DS_Store for writing

I do not know how the ._.DS_Store file got embed with the backup file and cause the failure of the extraction.

Currently, I cannot access to backend of the site. When I type the url, it sends me to the page to verify the database. (the beginning of the restoration process)

Please advise:
1. How can I prevent the ._.DS_Store file to get embed with the backup?
2. How can I restore the site based on this situation?

Thank you for your help.

  1. Don't panic, it's not that bad
  2. The backup archive is still there, probably in /administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup
  3. COPY (not move) the archive to the root of your site (we'll delete the file later, it will be lost if you move it)
  4. Upload kickstart.php from our Downloads page. You need the Core version, not the Pro version
  5. In your browser open www.mysite.com/kickstart.php
  6. Make sure "Skip most errors" is checked
  7. Extract the archive
  8. Finish the restore as usual
  9. Do the Dance of Joy

I reopened the ticket because I wanted to go over some options that may prevent the problem in the future.

In Configuration, in the Advanced Configuration section, enable Archive integrity check. This does a test extract at the end of your backup process. It makes the backup take a little longer, but it gives you peace of mind knowing that it could be extracted then.

In the Optional Filters section, check everything except the top option. The first two options exclude problem files, the bottom two exclude data that is easier regenerated than backed up.

Dale,

Thank you for your additional suggestions. I just enabled Archive integrity check and on the Optional Filters section I checked everything except the top option.

Based on your additional suggestions, will it prevent the ._.DS_Store file from my Mac to include to the backup file?

Could not open /var/www/html/xxxxxxxxxxxxx/._.DS_Store for writing

Thank you,

I wasn't sure about the .DS_Store file so I had to ask Nicholas. Here's what he said:
The correct filename is `.DS_Store`. I can, however, tell you how he ended up the screwed up filename. He created a ZIP archive on a Mac and extracted it on Linux. The ZIPs created on Macs have a "shadow" copy of each file, prefixed by '._' which I believe is used for HFS+ metadata. Since this file name is not one actually used for folder thumbnail caches our filters will not exclude it.

He can create a RegEx file exclusion filter of type "Exclude this file" and content `#/._.DS_Store$#`

This filter tells Akeeba Backup "if there is a file inside a subdirectory with the exact name ._.DS_Store you must filter it out"

Which I believe is what he's trying to do!

Please let him know :slightly_smiling_face:

Dale and Nicholas,

Thank you so much for doing the exclusion filter for the .DS_Store. I will have a peace of mind when I restore the backup inside the Joomla Administration. :)

I really appreciate your help.
