Nicholas,
I was testing a backup profile and was using a "Site Files Only" backup type.

When I started the Kickstart process it worked fine up until I got the the green "Install" button. When I started the install I received a 404 error. Although when I went to the front end and back end of the site, it all seemed to be intact and functioning.

I'm not sure why the Kickstart process stopped at the install, but it all seems updated and intact.
Please advise.

Sincerely,
Ken Koger

Ken,

I'm pretty sure that "Site Files Only" doesn't include an installer. It wouldn't make any sense. You don't need to restore the database and you probably don't need to change any CMS settings.

Kickstart is just the extractor, so it did its thing and extracted all the files, overwriting the existing files. The database was never touched, so it is intact too. So we would expect the site to work at this point.

Dale,
That makes sense, thank you. But I do have one problem. I created a user in the site I was uploading the files to. Since the backup was only files shouldn't the user have been left there? When I checked, the user was gone. How would that work since I didn't do anything to the databases?

dlb
I agree with you, the user should be there. Can you please double check? I can't think of any scenario where it wouldn't be there.

Dale,

I double-checked and the user was definitely missing after the files were extracted. Can you give me some guidance as this is an important piece that I'm trying to complete.

Here is what I'm trying to do.

I have a Production site: https://www.autopair.net
and
a sandbox site: https://sandbox.autopair.net

Note: I have made sure to move the sandbox file structure OUT of the public html ( I already solved that issue)

I do all my Joomla work, extension installs, and site updates on the sandbox. Once they are ready we are trying to do a files only backup process and then extract those files into the Production environment. The Production site, in the meantime, has new user data and other data created that I don't want to lose.

I am currently making a full Production site backup daily in case of a disaster. But I need to push just the files from the sandbox up to the Production site and not lose the data. When I tried this the last time, the extraction process lost the production data even though the backup instance I was using was a files and folders.

I asked Nicholas about this. Here is what he said:
The problem is that Joomla has the #__assets table.

This is where everything with ACLs writes information in: articles, categories, components, plugins, templates and third party components' data.

So depending on what you are changing you may end up NOT being able to merge the two sites.

Users are easy: just don't back up all the #users and #users_* tables.

If you are going to be changing menus, extensions, run updates etc on one site but also add content or make similar changes to the other site you're out of luck

The best thing I can think of is using something like SP Transfer to selectively move new content from the old, live site to the updated site and then use Akeeba Backup to transfer the updated site back to the live site

I know that's not what you or the user hopped for :(
