Mandatory information about my setup:

Joomla! version: 2.5.Beta1
PHP version: 5.3.8
MySQL version: 5.1.56
Host: gws-host.com
Admin Tools version: 2.1.14 stable

Description of my issue:

Nicholas,
Message as follows:
Your version 2.5.0_Beta1
Latest version 2.5BETA-2
Status Up to date

Seems not ok?

Next issue I have as positive criticism....
Installed version 2.1.14
Latest version 2.2.a2
Latest release date 2012-01-07

I suggest that you excluded one way or the other the alpha versions from the version checker. This will avoid problems when people are not aware that they are upgrading an alpha if not particularly stated?

2ct's

Got that Nicholas and understand your dilemma.
Issue one though (wrong "up-to-date" message is acknowledged?

Btw testing on 2.5.Beta2 and works as a charm so far

The way the Joomla! project marks Beta releases is not compatible with the versioning standard (the PHP versioning standard) it is using for regular releases. Moreover, it is not even consistent! As a result, I preferred to follow the versioning standard of the stable releases when determining if your Joomla! version is out of date and do a "best guess" version comparison for Joomla! alpha, beta and RC releases. Of course it's a hit and miss operation. I do not consider this a bug in Admin Tools, I consider it a bug in Joomla!'s versioning procedure. Beta releases should be marked as 2.0.b1, 2.0.b2 and so on in order to stick to the versioning standard Joomla! has adopted. Using 2.5.0_Beta1 (subminor version, underscore, BETA, beta revision) and 2.5BETA2 (no subminor version, BETA and beta revision) or even 2.5-BETA3 (no subminor, dash, BETA, beta revision, this one was used in the 1.6 release cycle) and 1.5.15BETA (subminor, BETA right after, no beta revision) makes it kinda difficult for a computer to figure out WTF it really means, don't you think? Joomla! needs some consistency, like my own software's versions which strictly abide by the PHP versioning standards for the last 4 and a half years.

Cheers! Let's hope the next Joomla! beta versions will have a more standardised format :D
