Description of my issue: I've created the following redirect.

Existing: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/gamechanger2013
new: give

Typing: http://www.girlstart.org/give sends me to http://donatenow.networkforgood.org/gamechanger2013 instead of https.

Is there another configuration setting I need to activate? or do I have to manually write the rewrite in the htacces file?

This is a known limitation. It will be fixed in the next release of Admin Tools in about a month. More specifically, if you set Keep URL Parameters to No the scheme (http, https) of the redirection URL will be kept. Otherwise it will be the same as the scheme of the URL you use to access your site.

by the way, where is the "Keep URL Parameters" option located. I've gone through all the settings and I dont see it.

It is found inside in each redirection, as long as you have Admin Tools 2.5.8. Since you didn't tell me your Admin Tools version (the one you reported is from the far future; you got confused with the Joomla! version) I am not sure if you are indeed using the latest version.
