I am using Admin Tools version 2.6.2 on one of my client's sites because GoDaddy only gives me two versions of PHP to choose from - 5.2 and 5.3. I did the PHP checker and saw the PHP version is 5.3.24. The Password-protect Administrator part has suddenly stopped working and I'm struggling to figure out why it happened and how to fix it. I fill in the username and password, save it, log out, close the browser (using both Maxthon and Chrome browsers) and the first tier login doesn't appear any more. It simply goes to the Joomla Administrator page to log in.

I know it's not working because the site is suddenly being hammered with login attempts.

At this time, upgrading Admin Tools is not an option until I get permission from the client to get GoDdaddy to upgrade their hosting service. So I'm stuck with 2.6.2 for now. Is there a procedure to fix this?

By the way, I LOVE your products...

Thanks,

Betsy Frazier

Betsy,

GoDaddy caches their .htaccess files. It can take up to an hour for a change in the .htaccess file to actually become active on your site.

The admin folder protection adds an .htaccess and .htpasswd file in the /administrator folder (and a third file elsewhere). If those files exist in /administrator, please rename them to make sure Admin Tools can create them without a problem. I don't think that is what is happening, but it is a possibility.

Thanks - I renamed the .htaccess and .htpasswd files in the administrator folder and then recreated the username/password in the Password-protect Administrator. I did not get the auto popup I usually get to re-enter the username and password, but when I logged off and then tested using the Firefox browser, I received the first tier popup box this time. I'll keep testing in other browsers.

(I do know the Password-protect Administrator feature does not work at all on my Android tablet. Never has...)

If there are other suggestions that I can test/implement, please let me know!

Thanks,

Betsy Frazier

The password protection works at the Apache level. You can't get in without entering the password. If you are accessing the site through your tablet without the password prompt then the tablet is caching the login information.

If you just aren't getting the password prompt on your tablet, check for a popup blocker. I didn't have any trouble with my Android phone using the Chrome browser.

Son of a gun, I never thought about the Ad Blocker app I have on my tablet. That must be it. I have the Ad Blocker on my tablet for sanity sake for reading news websites...

Thanks!

Not that I would ever advocate using such a thing but

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098

This is a monster hosts file for rooted devices only. The advantage of the hosts file over the ad blocker is that the hosts file is part of the operating system, the ad blocker runs all the time. Using a hosts file that large can slow down your boot time and some users of older devices have reported overall performance is degraded. Lots of people reporting problems in that thread have no clue what a hosts file is or what it does.
