 I just setup my first J3.3 site with admin tools pro. I use the admin secret URL parameter.

In version 2, when you log out of the admin the redirect is to the home page. Now there is no redirect, simply to the admin login with the parameter.

Is there something I have done differently, or is this a change in v3?

This is a change in version 3.3.1. This is the way it was supposed to work in previous versions. :-)
