 Hi,

i wonder what re the best security settings for joomla?
Changing it with admin tools does not change anything on the server, what am i missing?

Regards
Erwin

Erwin,

Generally we use 644 for files and 755 for folders. These should be the defaults set in the Permissions Configuration screen in Admin Tools. The Fix Permissions button actually applies these settings.

Some hosts and some extensions require custom settings, which is why you can adjust the permissions in the setup screen.

What is happening on your site when you try to fix permissions?

If you are on a server running Windows it's normal that nothing happens: Windows doesn't have the notion of permissions.

If you're on a Linux-based server you can try enabling the FTP layer in Joomla!'s Global Configuration. If that doesn't help it may just be that your server is set up in a way which doesn't allow PHP applications installed on your server to change permissions. This is rare but not unheard of. In this case you can still change permissions through your hosting control panel's file manager.
