 Hello,

in the last weeks, we had many "attacks" from IPs form Russia, Rumania, Bulgaria and China. The IPs are blocked after the set limit was reached. This works well. But now they use different IPs and the number of tries is under the set limit. So I decided to try the geographic blocking. But the log shows many entries of CSRF Shield with IPs from these countries. Should this happen? I thought, the IPs would be blocked, so they can't even try to login. There is no entry for geographic blockings.

Kind regards
Samson

Hello,

GeoBlocking is not an exact science.
Admin Tools will try to translate an IP address to a country, but IP are changing all the time, so a lot of times you could get a false result.

For what is worth, we tried to remove such feature from Admin Tools, since it's not so reliable as people could think: we got a lot of angry customers demanding it back.

Hello,

thank you for your explaining this. But there is not a single entry in the log. But there are hundrets, sometimes thousands of "attacks". I fear, the block does not work. Is there a posibility to check this?

In my opinion removing this feature is the wrong way. Blocking could make a server uninteresting for hackers, because there are many other servers, that are not defending themselves (bad english, I know, sorry for this). So everything, that hardens a server may be great. There are no "attacks" from german language area, but all from these countries that I told. It is a very fast method to make block them. Not all hackers are genius. ;-)

Kind regards
Samson

The correlation between IP and Country is not maintained by us, we integrated a tool develop by MaxMind, usually the IP database is updated every 2 weeks.
Please take a look at this scenario:
  • You blocked all visitors from Russia
  • Attacking IP X (Real country Russia)
  • When the attacker tries to reach your site, we perform a check vs the IP database
  • The IP is translated into a country. Let's say the database entry is not updated and it gets detected as Germany
  • The block is not performed since Germany is an allowed country

As I previously said, Geo Blocking is not a very effective way to protect your site: it could work, but there's no guarantee on it.

Okay, let's try this. Attack came from 79.173.89.XXX (if you need exact IP, I will send it to you, but not public because of german law). This IP is shown from MaxMind as russion. But it was not blocked, so an CRSF-Shield violation was shown. This should not be possible, shouldn't it? This happened 5 minutes ago.

First of all, have you installed and enabled the System - Akeeba GeoIP provider plugin.. This plugin includes the MaxMind GeoIP library Davide talked you about previously. If it's missing there is no way to figure out which country an IP belongs to, therefore it CANNOT be blocked by the GeoIP blocking.

Also, have you updated the database? The plugin is not updated with the latest MaxMind database. If the plugin is installed and active Admin Tools will remind you to update it and do it for you if you click the GeoIP database update button in the control panel.

Moreover, do keep in mind that the MaxMind web site has a newer and more complete version of the GeoIP database than the free of charge version Admin Tools can download and use. Sure enough, if you do pay MaxMind an arm and a leg you can get the more advanced, for-a-fee version of their database and use it with Admin Tools but it does sound like an overkill.

As Davide already told you the GeoIP feature is not an exact science. At best, it has 95% accuracy at the country level. This means that 1 out of every 20 requests will have the wrong country detected. For some countries (notably Russia and China) this rate may be far worse. It all comes down to what MaxMind decides to make available for free.

Finally please note that GeoIP is an incorrect solution. A real attacker can overcome it be means of a botnet, proxy or many other ways. The only people it manages to effectively block are a. legitimate users and b. script kiddies who didn't have a chance to hack you thanks to the other protections (like CSRFShield).

Hello,

thank you for this explanation. I decided to enforce other options and deactivate the geographic blocking.

Thank you
