Hello guys I wanted to know how I can disable the htacess temporarily to the admin section. I have developers who sometimes need to login and help me out. Can I turn it off and on

Thanks

dlb
You can't turn it on and off but you can swap the file pretty easily. Joomla! ships a "plain vanilla" .htaccess file in the root of your site named htaccess.txt. So all you have to do is rename .htaccess to something else, then rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess. When you want to put it back, just reverse the process.

Note that some hosts cache .htaccess files. And if you're on a NGYX system masquerading as Apache, it may take a while for the new .htaccess to be recognized. So if you don't see the changes right away, it doesn't mean it didn't work.

Thanks I will give it a try when you disable it is your Joomla admin url is still hidden ?

dlb
Probably. :-)

There are two ways to hide the back end login screen. One is the Secret URL Parameter. Swapping out the .htaccess file would not affect this at all, it is part of the Web Application Firewall.

The second way is to use the Password Protect Administrator function. This depends on the .htaccess file in the /administrator folder. As long as you don't do anything with that, it will still function when the .htaccess in the root is swapped.

Do I change the htacess file in the joomla/administrator directory ?

I changed it in the joomla root directory but there is no change the login window still pops up

dlb
You can rename the .htaccess file in /administrator to disable the extra pop up user ID and password.

Got worked great when I renamed the .htacess file in the admin root. So I don't need to touch the .htaccess files in the joomla root ?

dlb
Correct. I misunderstood which .htaccess you were trying to disable. The one in /admin controls the user ID and password.
