Please look at the bottom of this page (under Support Policy Summary) for our support policy summary, containing important information regarding our working hours and our support policy. Thank you!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
I backed up my site with Akeeba. I then started a Joomla update. It hung. And then I got a 500 error. I downloaded the Joomla 3.8 update package and installed the files via FTP to try to complete the update. However,I still have an error and no access to the admin area. Is there any way to restore the backup without admin access?

Absolutely maybe.

The absolutely part is that if we have the backup archive, we can extract it with Kickstart and restore the site. The maybe part is that we have to find the backup archive. The default location for that is /administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup. If it isn't there, you have to figure out where you moved it. You can change that default location or move the backups to cloud storage, there are lots of possibilities.

Since we're about to do bad things, you need to let your paranoia run free. Just download all the jpa/jps/zip files you find in that folder. Store them in a safe place and don't use your only copy for the restore. Some archives are single files. Others have a jpa/jps/zip file and one or more 001, 002, etc. sequential files with the same file name. It depends on your configuration. All files must be present to restore the archive. Did I remember to tell you to let your paranoia run free?

Here's the bad part. Since it went sideways during a major upgrade, you have to manually delete all the files and drop the tables. Normally you just let the restore drop the tables and overwrite the existing files. But things can be moved around during a major update, so we have to start clean.

Download Kickstart Core from our Downloads page (your license covers Pro but the Pro features will just get in the way here). Put Kickstart.php and your backup archive in the root folder of your site and call www.mysite.com/kickstart.php. Follow the screen prompts, it is very much like installing a new Joomla! site. If you run into problems, just let me know.
