Please look at the bottom of this page (under Support Policy Summary) for our support policy summary, containing important information regarding our working hours and our support policy. Thank you!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Is this possible?

I downloaded 3 backups, then I recovered my Joomla with the 1st backup on the list of backups. Now I want to recover from the 3rd backup. It is available on the server but it isn't in the list of backups in Akeeba Backup.

I haven't figured out how to create a link to the backup file!

Thanks,
Britt

dlb
You sure can! There are two ways:
  1. In Manage Backups, click the Import Archives button at the top of the screen. This will include the missing backup in the list.
  2. You can always extract your archive manually with Kickstart and start the restore from there. The backup does not have to be listed in the Manage Backups screen to be restored.

Hello,

I don't have "Import Archives button at the top of the screen"!

Then what do I do?

Thanks,
Britt

dlb
You really should, see attached.

If it isn't there, please double check that you have the Pro version installed and not the Core version. Check the version on the right side of the main screen.

Sure, I have the Core version!

Can I install the Pro version? Is it going to work with the restoration even if it was different versions?

Thanks,
Britt

dlb
Well, you'll have to fix it twice, but it's not that big a deal. Just download the Pro version and install it as if it was a new extension. Your current data and settings will not be affected. They you will be able to import the backup archive and restore it. That will revert your Akeeba Backup back to Core so you'll have to upgrade again. Just don't uninstall the Core version, that will cause you to lose your settings and possibly your stored backup archives.

I restored the website successfully but I am getting this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method JApplicationSite::isClient() in /home2/xxxx/public_html/plugins/system/logout/logout.php on line 48

Please help!

Thanks,
Britt

dlb
Clear your browser cache. I don't think that's the problem, but it could be and I'd hate to miss the simplest of solution.

What version of Joomla did you have installed and what version did you restore? You can't restore a 3.6 over a 3.8, for example.

I said that wrong. Restoring 3.6 over 3.8 requires special handling, but it can be done.

I don't think had Joomla 3.8 and it didn't work empty the cache, and I tried another browser — I still get that error message!

Thanks!

dlb
Britt,

When are you getting the error? Is is just when you log out?

This is very unusual for a same server restore. Post restore problems are usually related to changes in the server environment when moving from one server to another. Is this the same server that the backups were taken on? Why did you have to import them into Manage Backups?

It is on the same server and I am getting it when I am trying to open the website and the same message when I am trying to log in!

The backups were not in the list of backups — because I did a restore from an earlier version — so that must be the reason they were not on the list of backups.

dlb
#1 - We can fix this. It's messy, but doable.

#2 - Paranoia is your friend. Before we do anything else, download those backup archives from your server to your local computer using FTP in binary mode. One of the steps that is coming up is going to delete them and we don't want to lose them. Did I mention that paranoia is your friend?

Davide recognized the error message, we restored one version of Joomla! over another, 3.7 over 3.6, for example. You cna't do that. When you change minor versions, you have to delete the files first. Joomla! moves things around to different folders at the minor version change and when you get both versions, bad things happen.
  1. Download your backup archives to you local computer. The next step will DELETE them.
  2. Delete all of the file in your site. FTP will do it , but is pretty slow. Your cPanel file manager will probably be quicker.
  3. Upload the backup archive to the root of your site.
  4. Upload kickstart.php (available from our Downloads page, you want the Core version, not Pro, for this job) to the root of your site.
  5. Go to www.mysite.com/kickstart.php to start Kickstart and follow the screen instructions.
  6. Kickstart will extract the files from the archive and then hand off to the restore script. At that point it should look exactly like the Manage Archives restore process.

That should do it!

I used kickstart when I transferred sites, and what I can remember I had to set up a new database!? Do I have to do this in this case?

brittsan
Is it enough to uninstall Joomla from the server?

dlb
You don't need to set up a new database, you can use the existing one. You may want to drop the tables if you want to be really picky about it. Any table that will be restore will be dropped first so that is not normally necessary.

I'm not sure if uninstall will do it. We have extra files on there that we want to get rid of. It depends on how the uninstall does the delete. We want all of the Joomla! files gone when we're done, a clean slate.

Hello,

I restored the site successfully but I am still getting the same error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method JApplicationSite::isClient() in /home2/xxxxxx/public_html/plugins/system/logout/logout.php on line 48

I have no clue what to look for!!!

Thanks again!!!

dlb
Britt,

I can only think of two things that could cause this.
  1. Not all of the files were deleted when you did the restore.
  2. The backup already has the corrupted files in it.

Are you SURE that the site was clean when you did the restore?

I don't think we have a bad backup because you would have had to log in to do the backup and we can't do that. Unless it was a scheduled backup...

I am not sure all files were deleted!!! I clicked on uninstall Joomla, then I didn't remove any other files because I really don't know which ones that belongs to Joomla!!!

Britt

dlb
Is there anything else installed on that site that we have to worry about? For example, another site, a non-Joomla! program like a forum, family tree, gallery, etc.?

There are templates and 1 gallery, but they should be in the backup!?

Would it help if the server people cleaned out the site so I can start from scratch? BUT would I then be able to recover the site?

Thanks!

dlb
We can restore the backup archive to a bare site, in this case we need to. We don't need to have Joomla! installed.

If your host can clean out the site, that would be great. I know my host has a couple of folders left on a "bare" site. I think they are automatically recreated but having someone who knows do it would be helpful.

I managed to remove all files and successfully recovered the site again — and it opens without any errors! It would have been great to know what caused it!!!

I know I have to update Joomla and Akeeba Backup — does it matter in what order I do it?

Thanks for all help you provided!!!
Britt

dlb
The error indicates that you had a mixture of Joomla! versions. When you restore a different version than you have installed, you need to restore on a bare site. The restore process does not delete any files, it only overwrites them. So if the newer version created a new file, it survives the restore process.

It does not matter which you upgrade first, Joomla! or Admin Tools, unless you're on a Joomla! version prior to 3.6. If that is the case, you need to do Joomla! first.
