Description of my issue:
I have a web site run by joomla installation number 1 - this contains, in subfolders, three further joomla installations, each with its own database, etc.

Trying to save myself time and effort in backing up each time there is a joomla update by doing it all in one place, rather than installing Akeeba backup 4 times in each of the joomla instances.

I have installed Akeeba backup pro in the basic joomla installation, that is the one located in the pubic_html folder of the web site. I can create several profiles to back up , firstly the default, public_html instance of Joomla fine.
If I set up a second profile which includes only the folder
public_html/joomla_instance_2
question 1: will this automatically include the correct database for instance 2 or do I need to add an extra database to the profile to achieve this?
question 2: will this second profile automatically backup the default (public_html instance) database?

Backing up all three sites in one backup is bad. You can do the backup easily, depending on the size of the sites. If the combined size is very large, there could be problems with the archive and you will have to watch your part sizes. The problem arises when you try to restore. It is a nightmare to restore a single site out of a combined backup. Not recommended.

You can set up all three backups in the "root" site. You would need to exclude the other sites' folders for the two child sites. You will also need to exclude the root site's database tables and include the child site's database in the child sites' backups. When you restore, you won't get a full restore, you'll have to manually adjust the configuration.php file. Not a big deal, but another task.

It works best if you just install Akeeba Backup in all three sites and back them up individually. You don't have to exclude or add any databases, as long as you're using separate databases, not just different table prefixes. You only have to exclude the child sites' folders for the root site backup, no adjustments should be necessary for the child sites. Restore just works for all three.
