Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.5.22
PHP version: 5.2
MySQL version: unknown
Host: go daddy.com
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.13 professional

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue: If I run back up from the backend, the backup is successful and posts jpa file to backspace server. However, when the backup runs from the command line (which is the log file I have attached), the back up does state whether or not the back up was successful, however, it DOES NOT post the jpa file to the backspace server. This was working for a short period, then suddenly stopped working.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nothing stops working "suddenly". There is always a cause and effect :) The effect is that the backup process is terminated prematurely. The fact that the backup is not uploaded to RackSpace is a side-effect. The OK status of the backup does not mean that the entire backup process completed successfully; it merely means that the backup archive generation completed successfully. The post-processing (upload to CloudFiles) failed, but this is never reflected in the backup status.

The cause is that the backup process now takes over 120 seconds. All CRON jobs in GoDaddy are set to be forcibly terminated after 120 seconds. If the CRON job is not complete, tough luck, it's terminated. Unfortunately, you only have two realistic solutions: upgrade to a bigger (VPS or dedicated server) account, or go to a different host. There is also the possibility of using the front-end backup with webcron.org, but please note that in this case you have to split the backup archive to 5-10Mb parts in order to avoid timeout errors while the archive is being uploaded to CloudFiles. If you ask me, the best solution is to run away from GoDaddy. Their servers are slow as molasses, their support is a bad joke and they charge you an arm an a leg for that.

Would splitting the archive into smaller chunks under JPA format work? Say 5 or 10 MB?

And I know Godaddy sucks so does network solutions and many others. I've just been using then for so long and have so much with them, simply "running away" from them is easier said than done. But I appreciate your candor.

No, if you continue to use GoDaddy's CRON mode, splitting the archive won't do any difference, as the total time required to backup + upload will be fairly constant (actually, it will be up to 1-2 seconds more when you split the archives).

And, yes, GoDaddy really sucks. I mean, take a stock Joomla! installation on GoDaddy and on a performance-tuned host, e.g. CloudAccess.net. The speed difference is more than dramatic, it's nearly an order of magnitude apart.

Ok Nicholas, I'll work towards changing hosts! So you are recommending CloudAccess.net?

Yes, I actually recommend either of CloudAccess.net (very fast servers, slightly difficult to setup CRON jobs), iRedHost (excellent service) and Rochen (mostly their reseller, MVS and dedicated server plans; their shared hosting plans are not top-notch any more).

Hi Nicholas, sorry to bother you again with this. I took your advice and opened an account with CloudAccess, but like you stated, their cron job set-up is impossible. What is worse is that their support staff can't even get it to work. Can you help and explain exactly how to set-up cron on CloudAccess?

Thanks.

Hi Jason,

I have never been able to set up a proper CRON job with CloudAccess (but, then again, I've only tried in two occasions). If even their tech support can't guide you through, you can always use the very cheap WebCron.org service to schedule your backups. We have instructions in the "Automating your backup" chapter of our documentation.

Hi Nicholas, after attempting to cancel my account with CloudAccess, one of their admins got it working. So simple, why so much headache? Anyway, for you and the rest of the Akeeba users out there, here is how to set it up.

Follow the Akeeba instructions pertaining to enabling front-end and remote backups. Assign a secret key and save.

Here is the part I was missing, which only CloudAccess could provide:
http://your-domain-name.com/index.php?option=com_akeeba&view=backup&key=12345

The above URL is entered within the cPanel of your Joomla Admin once your site is moved over to CloudAccess. Simply go to Site-->Control Panel-->Cloud Control Panel-->Cron Jobs.

It's really that simple! I don't know why it took so much effort to get this from CloudAccess, but they are experiencing serious growing pains right now, so it's understandable.

Thanks for the awesome product! Cheers.

Actually, the URL you were missing is clearly stated in the page I linked you to in my reply just above yours.
