It is possible, but it all comes down to whether your hosts supports it. Here's what I've done on my site.

  1. I created a directory above my site's root. Let's call it "my_backups"
  2. I edited the Output Directory in Akeeba Backup's configuration to point to [ROOTPARENT]/my_backups
  3. I created a new FTP account for my site and set its root directory to be my_backups.

Therefore Akeeba Backup backs up into the my_backups directory. Since my FTP client connects using the new FTP account I created, it's limited to seeing the contents of the my_backups directory (they can't go a directory above, therefore no access to the site's files). Since that directory is off-site it's not possible to access its contents from the web. That's it.
