Hey Nick,
How can I open a .jpa span archive in Windows?
I've tried 7-zip with no luck and you're JoomlaPack Native Tools are nowhere to be found. :-(

Wow, where did you remember the JoomlaPack Native Tools? :D For the last three years we're using Akeeba eXtract Wizard, available for free in our Downloads section.

Okay, I see that you have a Windows version, but what I really want to do is look inside an archive and find just the few files we corrupted and extract them.

Do you have a JPA archive viewer-tool or can we modify 7-Zip to do something like that?

P.S. And, the JoomlaPack Native Tools are what EVERYTHING recommends to open JPA files, (at least that I could find online.) You might want to seed the newer tool.

I am not sure what "EVERYTHING" in your post refers to, but it's not our documentation. If "EVERYTHING" means third party websites which are not under my control, old tickets from three and four years ago or release announcements dating back to December 2009, I have to remind you that the first thing you are supposed to do before requesting support is Read The Fine Manual. As a tongue in cheek, you may want to consult the information on this humorous and politically incorrect page ;) It's the way all developers really feel deep inside when you ask us about things we've already documented.

Yes, documented. And I quote the documentation which I've personally written:
f you are using the JPA or JPS formats, or if you are using the ZIP format but don't have access to a compatible archive extraction utility, we have a solution for you. Our free Akeeba eXtract Wizard is available for Windows, Linux (32 and 64 bits) and Mac OS X and will extract the backup archives locally, just like any other archive extraction utility. The rest of the process is the same as the previous case. You can download it free of charge from our website.

I forgot to reply to one thing. You cannot simply see inside a JPA archive. You can extract it. That's all you can do. There are reasons for that. ZIP files use a huge index area to allow you to peek at files and extract individual files. The downside is that the creation of the index requires a ton of memory, a lot of time (= timeout errors on shared hosting) and requires a lot of space (= problems with archive bloat). It was one of the compromises we had to make when designing the JPA format.
