It appears that HostGator has recently made changes on their servers which kill the backup script (actually: all backup scripts) because they are using too much CPU and memory. I have tried, in vain, working around this issue. HostGator has applied very tight restrictions and we'd end up making the backup about 300 times slower, becoming completely impractical. Please contact them. If they decline to help you vote with your wallet and move to another host. That's the only options you're left with.

I cut and pasted your response to them, and they denied absolutely that they had  throttled in the way you describe but said it was timing out.

After I sent the comment to support, the backups started working again though :). Magic.

My account is a VPS (more expensive account) - so I wonder whether they made an exception.

Many thanks.

LOL!! Magic! :D It seems that the tech support of your host thinks we're idiots. We very well saw that there was no such thing as a timeout (the runtime was 2 seconds, the timeout was waaaaaay more than that – plus the log was saying that the finalisation worked and Akeeba Backup even wrote its intermediate file on the disk). But, magically, right after you contacted them it all works again. ROFL! That's a good one. It shows a lot about the (lack of) support quality with some hosts :)
