I am completely confused!  I wish to have Akeeba backup run automatically, daily and store backups for 14 days.  I setup the cron job ok (at least I think I did as it got a green tick),but where on earth do you set that you would like it to backup once daily and at say 2am?

It's set to:

home/user/public_html/cli/akeeba-backup.php

And it is set to run twice an hour.  Am I being really stupid, does this mean it will take a backup twice an hour, ie every time a cron job runs a backup is taken?

I noticed you recommended not to use the lazy backup plugin so I won't.

Thanks in advance,

Olly

Basic knowledge: each run of the akeeba-backup.php script produces one full backup.

Extending from that basic knowledge you can answer your own questions. Actually, you already did :) When you are stting up a CRON job you are definining the freqeuncy of the CRON job, i.e. how often the script will run. Since one run of the script equals one backup, the frequency of the CRON job is also the frequency of your backups.

Right now you have defined the frequency to be twice per hour. This will result in one backup every 30 minutes, i.e. 48 backups per day. This is an overkill. A daily or twice daily backup is sufficient. Anything more frequent is consuming too much server resources without any significant gains.

Does the CRON job run at all? I mean, do you get a report email saying that it's run?
