I think you got confused.

The database backup is always generated as SQL (Structured Query Language) files.

When you are restoring the backups you can choose between the two database drivers, MySQL and MySQLi. They both talk to the same underlying database server: MySQL (pronounced my-sequel). The difference is:

  • The MySQL (withour the trailing i) is the old driver. It was designed for the MySQL server version 4.x and does not support some of the exciting new features of the MySQL server versions 5.x. It's also dead slow.
  • The MySQLi (with the trailing i) is the new driver, where "i" stands for "improved". And improved it is! Much faster, supports all new features, the whole shebang. On newer versions of PHP (PHP 5.4 and later) this also causes PHP to use the even newer driver called "mysqlng" (where "ng" stands for "Next Generation"). Unlike the drivers in PHP 5.2 and 5.3 this one does not use the external MySQL connector. It's a native implementation which is lightning fast, uses less memory and is even more robust.

So, answering your question, this is not something you choose at backup time. It's something you choose during restoration.
