Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes

Joomla! version: 2.5.9
PHP version: 5.3.6
MySQL version: 5.1
Host: awardspace.com
Akeeba Backup version: 3.7.2

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue: Will not instal by any method

1. Upload Package File results in Error 500 script exuction error

2. Can not manual install as the zip package will not extract locally, two files with the same name. see attachment for details

3. Install from URL results in "Error connecting to the server: failed to open stream: No such file or directory Invalid URL"

The packagge will instal on the same server on a Joomla 3.0 site

No, it's not corrupt. You have a permissions, timeout or memory limit issue.

None of those would explain why I can not extract the zip file locally without errors, or why on the same server it works with a Joomla 3 website.

What you're saying doesn't explain why the package does get installed on thousands of sites and can be extracted locally on my Mac without a problem.
