Joomla! version: 2.5.11
PHP version: 5.3.25
MySQL version: 5.0.96-community
Host: VPS Hostgator
Akeeba Backup version: 3.7.6

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
I am running Akeeba backup in one of the Cpanel of the VPS server to back up websites of the other Cpanels on the server.

Is it possible to do this without setting the permission of the public_html folder of the websites I am backing up to 755?
If yes, what is the way to do this?
If not, is it okay to set the permission of the public_html folder to 755 in terms of security and functionality?

I am asking this as Hostgator, when the server is rebooted, resets all the folder permission under the root of the cpanel to 750, blocking Akeeba to back up the files under other public_html folders.

Thanks,
Tom

You'd need 755 permissions. In terms of security it is lousy, as every site can read any other site's files. The feature you are using was designed to be used on dedicated servers with sites of the same client only or a single account with AB installed in a site in a subdir, backing up other sites in subdirs of its root's parent directory. It's a bad idea using it for cross-hosting-account backups on a shared host.

Thank you for your reply.

I am using AB to back up sites within one Virtual private server.

Do you think that is okay?

If all sites on the VPS are owned by the same client, yes, it's OK. Otherwise it is a security issue as all it takes is one site to get hacked for all sites to be breached.
