EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Please see previous thread #18309 that's now closed.

Hi Nicolas,

I have been reading through the documentation that you sent me previously: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/data-processing-engines.html and I would like clarification from you if possible please, of the following;

For me to be able to setup a CRON task on my webhosting server (Which I currently have working for a normal akeeba backup scheduled task to the same webhosting server) but for the akeeba backup's to be automatically sent and uploaded to a networked server that is used by the charity I'm doing this work for, in essence it's a NAS-Share style server and it seems perfect to have the actual website files and database backed up to this for disaster prevention and so forth.

Am I only to implement the "Upload to Remote FTP Server" ? Can this be a NAS-Share networked server, whilst it doesn't hold anything but company's files and folders for the networked terminals within the office.... it does have internet access but I'm unsure how to set this up and being a bit out of my comfort zone but hoping to learn from you and get this new way of backing up our site files implemented and sort asap.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Regards,
Rob

It doesn't matter where the file server is located or how it used. This is irrelevant. What you really need to care is:
  • Which connection methods does my file server implement? This is most likely FTP, that's why I proposed to use the "Upload to remote FTP server"
  • Can my web server reach the file server over the network? If they are on the same network yes, they can. If your web server is hosted externally (probably in a distant datacenter) and your NAS is NOT accessible over the Internet you can't use it. If putting the NAS on the Internet is not an option you cannot use this backup method. In this case you might want to use something like Dropbox to store your daily backups and have someone move them from the Dropbox directory to the NAS every day.

Hi Nicholas,

You're correct in that our website web server is a service provided by a 3rd party and if completely off site in a data centre somewhere in the world haha.

Our NAS can no doubt have an internet connection where required and once I know exactly what is required, I can contact the company / guy who maintain the NAS for the organisation I'm doing my ICT internship with and whom I'm wanting to get safer backups with limited cost (As they're a charity) and tell him exactly what he needs to setup to facilitate the websites akeeba backup from the web server > the NAS.

Do I understand the correctly and the above is the case or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

OK, you are in a good track.

What we need is being able to connect to the NAS via FTP or SFTP over the open Internet. This means that he will have to use port forwarding on their router to forward a specific port to the NAS' port 21 (FTP) or 22 (SFTP). He can then give you the IP and port which you can enter in Akeeba Backup.

If they have a dynamic IP they will need to also set up a dynamic DNS solution, e.g. DynDNS, which essentially provides a static hostname for their ever-changing IP address. This is a free solution.

I was able to do both with my inexpensive home router and NAS. It's really simple setting this all up.
