EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

I can't download my jpa backup files from the server, they are about 2.5 gigs big and I am using FileZilla, I get the following Error:

426 Transfer aborted. Operation not permitted

Could anybody shed any light on this please, my provider says that there is no download limit.

Thanks
In Advance

Is your archive in one single part? 2 Gb is a magic number on a 32 bit server. If your file is greater than 2 Gb it will be corrupted. There is a similar magic number on a 64 bit server, but I can't count that high (what comes after pentabytes?).

Let's try breaking your archive into 1 Gb parts. You can do that under Configuration, Archive engine, Configure. Set the Part size for split archves to 1023.82 and try your backup again.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, however my site is broken and I can't get into it which is why I am trying to download the backup file from the server via FTP, Is there a way of doing this please ?

thanks

I sent a note to Nicholas, but I probably missed him for today. It is pretty late in his corner of the world.

A Google search of the error message got several hits that suggest switching from passive to active mode on your FTP client.

I did get a reply from Nicholas:
When he’s using FTP to transfer a file Akeeba Backup doesn’t run. Joomla! doesn’t run. PHP doesn’t even run! It’s just his FTP server and the only thing that defines its behavior is the hosting configuration. The only two things that could go wrong are:
  1. Wrong permissions / ownership of the backup archive. The download doesn’t even start, there is no 426 transfer error, the host can easily see it coming.
  2. The host has a connection timeout to the FTP server which is not enough for the download to complete.

There are a couple of considerations on the possibility of a host restriction. Sometimes host support will lie about hidden restrictions in your host account, sometimes first level support doesn't even know about the restrictions. And finally, you have to ask the question very carefully, Nicholas was guessing it was a time restriction, not a download restriction.

He did say there was another possibility if you can't get the file via FTP. Let me know if we need to go there.

Thanks for your help Dale, you didn't have to disturb Nicholas, I am going to try and repair the back end before I go for the restore, I could upload kickstart and restore from the server but I like to have a copy of the backup locally in case something goes wrong....

thanks for your help Dale

If I can fix it, that's great. If I can't, I need to find somebody who can. Generally I don't have to look too far. If you need any more help, just yell.

Hi Dale,

Is there any way of testing a backup file to make sure that it doesn't need any more parts or if it is not corrupt before you go ahead and delete everything in your public.html folder ?

Thanks

If the archive will extract, that does not guarantee that it will restore but it gives you a great warm fuzzy. There are things that can go wrong other than extraction, but when it won't extract, that's a really bad start. Your archive is big enough that the comment is probably useless. It would take a while and a lot of room to copy it before you could extract it in another location.

I'm not techie enough to give you a definitive answer on the screen shot. My initial reaction is that it is not accurate. It was voodoo that worked one time and has now become legend. The System Restore Point does a mini backup prior to installing the extension. If the backup should fail, the installation would abort. There were problems with the SRP plugin several versions ago and at that point, you had to disable it to install anything. That issue has been fixed for 4 or 5 versions and the current plugin operates as expected. The plugin is easy enough to turn off, just disable System - System Restore Point.

Hi Dale,

I went for it last night, I deleted everything in my root folder, uploaded Kickstart and then moved my saved 2.5gig backup file to the root. After that the restore went flawlessly, once I had restored the site I changed the settings in Akeeba to backup in JPA chunks of 490 MB so that I can download and keep a copy, I think there were about 8 parts. I just thought the installer info might be of use to Nicholas as it is always interesting to hear what other people are saying.

Once again thank you for your Excellent support

cheers
