I can have the month and year appear as text names appear in the Manage Backups page using the php abbreviations as it says in the help, but in the messages sent at the end of backup which is scheduled by cron on the same server, I can only have messages that provide numeric values for the month and day of the week. Am I missing something or is that the only possibility?? I'd much rather have the month and day of the week in text in those emails.

thanks

No, it is not possible.

However, since it's an email, the date and time the email is sent is presented to you by the mail client.
