I restored a version I had saved a couple of hours ago, so the immediacy of the problem is no longer urgent.

However, apparently a problem does exist and I would like to avoid this happening in the future, so a solution that answers the problem rather than my avoiding the problem as I am doing right now is the preferable path.

Cheers,
Jim

The issue is very well documented in our Troubleshooting Wizard. Needless to say, the Joomla! session bug was squashed by yours truly, the patch is accepted and Joomla! 1.7.1 onwards won't suffer from it. The other Joomla! installation bugs are worked around as of Akeeba Backup 3.3.4. The remaining issue (user doing something funky with the Joomla! view levels and forgetting it until he logs out from his site) is obviously not something I can work around because it has no correlation with what I do in Akeeba Backup; that's a user issue and I'm documenting the workaround because people always think that Akeeba Backup is to blame. That's understandable. The last thing you remember installing is always to blame, right? More so when you perform an update through the one click action email which starts a new user session and makes the problem evident. But it's not caused by Akeeba Backup.

Thanks for the feedback Nicholas.
Proves that one can never be too over-active in backing up one's site.
Have a good weekend once it get here!

That's true! You can never possibly have one backup too many. You are always one backup too little, that's for sure :)

Nicholas,
It has happened yet again.
I have a backup that is 12 hours old but don't want to use that due to some updates since then.
What other options do I have to get pass this not being able to log in.
My present Joomla Version is: 1.7.3
My present Akeeba Backup is the most recent (end of Dec, '11 or first part of Jan.? )but can't verify exact version for obvious reasons.
Thanks,
Jim

Assuming that what has happened again is that you see no menu items in the back-end page, here are your options:
a. If you still see a logout button, click on it
b. In any other case, clear the contents of the jos_session table (do NOT delete the table itself!) and clear your browser's cookies and cache. Now log back in to your sire.

If this still doesn't help, you have screwed up your ACL permissions. In this case, the workaround is here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/abbrokesite.html (under the "The ACL issue and its workaround" header).

Thanks for your reply Nicholas,

I cannot explain what happened, but this morning about 12 hours after not being able to log in, I am now able to.

Maybe there was something in cache that was preventing a normal login?

Hi Jim,

Actually, it could be! Many browsers cache redirections, causing "phantom issues". Usually, shutting down the browser and/or clearing its cache does the trick. Some other times all you need is clearing the browser's cookies. That's the "fun" part of dealing with websites: there are so many unrelated things which can go awry that it's overwhelming at first. Soon enough, after an adequate number of screw ups, you start developing a "hunch" of what could be wrong, try something which would seem absurd to a layman and wham! It works. As I usually say, web development is one part science and one part sorcery ;)
