I have joomla 1.0.15 stable (daytime) web site

I have down loaded joomla pack 1.2.2 which down loaded sucessfully so it said

I have made a back up to my desk top and went into it to open zip with 7 Zip it did its function but at end it said CRC failed............ files is broken this was on everything

On the zip folder size is 36.3mb all i really want to know is if i had a problem could i use the file to save my website or would the information be missing which is needed???

The CRC errors are a known problem. This will occur with php versions less than 5.2 and/or without the "hash" module installed. Under these circumstances, JoomlaPack can't properly calculate the checksum values required by the zip format. The good news is that the files are fine, it is only the checksums that are wrong. The JPA file format was created to avoid this problem, it does not use the checksums. The problem with JPA is that your 7Zip program won't read it. You need unjpa.php (from utilities), eXtract (from Native Tools) or kickstart to extract that format.

The only way to really know that a backup is good is to restore it to a test server or a different folder of your live server.

Hello Dale,

Thank you for your reply being a complete novice on the computer these things are a worry.

unjpa.php ,extract or kickstart from joomla - do they go on my desk top or back of my joomla site(administrator)

when i down load the back up from joomla to my desk top - to copy on to disk can i use one of the above ??

I have read another forum which says you are having a problem with eXtract 2008have you updated the version so I can download it Yet??

I think that the test server or folder is a good idea but this i think is beyond me. I did not set up site myself - the blokewho did has gone away now so I am left holding the baby so to speak.

I await your reply

Thanks

The unjpa.php and eXtract programs would go on your local machine. Yes, eXtract has been updated, the 2009 version no longer has the extract problem. Kickstart is a special purpose program used during restore. You would upload your backup archive and kickstart.php and then call kickstart from your browser. It would extract the archive on the host site and give you a link to the install script. So the answer on that one is "neither." :D

Probably the easiest choice for extracting an archive locally would be eXtract. That is a native Windows tool, but it will run under Linux with Wine. (If you don't run Linux, you can just ignore that last sentence.) The unjpa.php program would require php to be installed on your local machine. While not impossible, that makes eXtract look really good. :D

Restoring the backup just to test it is for the truly paranoid. It is a nice luxury to have the test system to try out different components to see if you really like them, etc. Doing the same thing on your live server in a "parallel" installation will work, but it has some dangers too. The chances of working on the wrong system are greatly increased. It may sound really dumb, but it is easy to do - I know!

We were all new once. Give it a little time, the baby grows up quick.

Helo Dale

Thanks for your reply . Please can you tell me where to find eXtract 2009 and what version if there is more than one on joomla -I will down load it on to my desktop and keep it there - then I will download a back up - and put backup to disk I think I can manage that.

As far as a test for seeing if it works - oh boy I think you have got e beat just will have to take it that the zip is working with extract to unloead the zip. knowing my luck I would loose the lot can't deal hasstle at my age - lets hope I never need to restore.

You can find Native Tools 2009 on our downloads page. There are two versions there, one is an .exe file, a Windows self installing program. The other is a .zip file, you would have to extract the file and put it where you want it (and add it to your menu if you want). The exe file will install both eXtract and JPRemote. JPRemote is really cool, but we'll save that for another day. :D
